AMD RX 9070 XT Reviewed: Speed Tested

Authore: LoganUpdate:Nov 05,2025

AMD has been fiercely competing with Nvidia in the high-end GPU market for generations, but the Radeon RX 9070 XT marks a strategic shift. Instead of chasing the ultra-premium segment dominated by the RTX 5090, AMD now delivers what truly matters: exceptional performance for mainstream gamers at an unbeatable value.

Purchasing Guide

The AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT launches March 6 with an MSRP of $599. Be aware that third-party models may carry premium pricing – aim to stay below $699 for the best deal.

Specs and Features

Constructed on RDNA 4 architecture, the RX 9070 XT introduces groundbreaking RT and AI Accelerators that power FSR 4 – AMD's first AI-upscaling technology. While framerate improvements over FSR 3.1 may be modest, image quality reaches new heights through superior accuracy. The Adrenalin software conveniently allows disabling FSR 4 entirely for those prioritizing raw performance.

The redesigned shader cores deliver remarkable per-core efficiency, enabling significant generational gains despite sporting fewer Compute Units (64 vs. 84 in the RX 7900 XT). Each unit contains 64 Streaming Multiprocessors totaling 4,096 cores, complemented by 128 AI accelerators.

Memory configuration sees a reduction to 16GB GDDR6 on a 256-bit bus (versus 20GB/320-bit previously). While this affects bandwidth and capacity, 4K gaming remains viable. Power consumption sees a nominal increase to 304W TDP, though real-world testing shows better efficiency than its predecessor.

Notably, AMD skips reference designs this generation, relying exclusively on partner models like Powercolor's surprisingly compact triple-fan Reaper edition. Standard power connectors (dual 8-pin PCIe) ensure broad compatibility with recommended 700W PSUs. Display outputs include three DisplayPort 2.1a and one HDMI 2.1b.

FSR 4

FSR 4 represents AMD's long-awaited answer to DLSS, leveraging AI accelerators for superior image reconstruction. The technology analyzes previous frames and game-engine data to intelligently upscale content, delivering visibly cleaner results than temporal-based FSR 3 – albeit with a 10-20% performance tradeoff.

The quality improvements shine in detail-rich environments like foliage and text rendering. While performance-conscious gamers can revert to FSR 3.1 through Adrenalin software controls, FSR 4 proves invaluable for visually demanding single-player experiences.

Performance

The RX 9070 XT delivers stunning value at $599, outperforming the $749 RTX 5070 Ti by 2% on average while maintaining a 17% advantage over AMD's previous-gen flagship. Its 4K capabilities shine brightest, making it the new budget 4K champion – even with ray tracing enabled.

Synthetic benchmarks reveal interesting contrasts: While trailing the 5070 Ti by 18% in Speed Way, AMD's card gains a 7% lead in Steel Nomad. Real-world gaming shows equally compelling results:

• Call of Duty: Black Ops 6: 15% faster than RTX 5070 Ti
• Cyberpunk 2077 (RT Ultra): Only 5% behind despite $150 price difference
• Red Dead Redemption 2: Leads by 14% at 125 fps
• Assassin's Creed Mirage: 12% advantage at 163 fps
• Black Myth Wukong: Surprising 8% RT performance lead

The RX 9070 XT evokes memories of legendary value flagships like the GTX 1080 Ti. While not the absolute performance king, it delivers exceptional price-to-performance – something sorely missing in today's GPU market. For most gamers seeking high-end 4K experiences without extravagance, AMD's latest hits all the right notes.
