A fresh look at retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch, focusing on Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the eShop. Unlike some other platforms, the Switch has a surprisingly limited selection of direct ports of these classics. This list highlights ten favorites—four GBA and six DS—found beyond the Nintendo Switch Online app. Let's dive in!
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive original holds a slight edge, this GBA version is a solid alternative. A fun comparison piece, and arguably a more streamlined experience. Steel Empire offers engaging gameplay, even for those who typically avoid shooters.
Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the GBA. This side-scrolling action title, the first in an excellent series, might have some initial rough edges, but it's a strong starting point. The series refines its formula in later installments, but the first game is essential.
Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
A second Mega Man entry, justified by its significant difference from Mega Man Zero. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The clever concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is fully realized. While the series' later entries see diminishing returns, the original offers plenty of fun.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
The Castlevania Advance Collection is a must-have, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For some, it even surpasses the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. The engaging soul-collecting system complements the fun gameplay, and the unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal. A top-tier GBA title.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)
Originally a cult hit with limited distribution, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge gained wider recognition on DSiWare. This launchpad for Shantae's success ensured her presence across subsequent consoles. Its origins trace back to an unreleased GBA game, which is slated for release soon.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
Arguably a GBA title (its origin console), Ace Attorney blends investigation and courtroom drama with humorous storytelling. The first game is exceptional, though later entries are also highly regarded.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the Ace Attorney creator, Ghost Trick offers a unique gameplay mechanic. As a ghost, you manipulate objects to save others while uncovering the mystery of your own death. A captivating and highly recommended experience.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
A top-tier Nintendo DS game, best experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version provides a suitable alternative for those without a DS. A truly exceptional game in every aspect.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all three DS Castlevania games. Dawn of Sorrow shines with improved button controls over its original touch controls, but all three are worthwhile.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
A franchise challenging to adapt outside the DS/3DS ecosystem, but Atlus’s Switch port is a playable success. Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, is a substantial RPG, albeit a bit complex.
