Russian Checkers (8x8): Rules Summary
-
Movement & Capture: White moves first. Pieces move only on dark squares. Mandatory captures are enforced. Captures are allowed both forward and backward. Kings move and capture diagonally to any square. The Turkish strike rule applies (only one opponent piece can be captured per move). Multiple capture options allow for any choice (not necessarily the longest). Pawns reaching the opponent's back rank become kings and can immediately utilize king moves if possible.
-
Draw Conditions: A draw is declared under several specific circumstances, including: a player with three (or more) kings against one opponent king not capturing within 15 moves; no change in the balance of forces (no captures or king promotions) for a specified number of moves (30 moves for 4-5 pieces, 60 moves for 6-7 pieces); a player with three pieces against a single king on the "high road" unable to capture within 5 moves; 15 consecutive moves involving only kings; or three (or more) repetitions of the same board position with the same player to move.
International Checkers (10x10): Rules Summary
- Movement & Capture: White moves first. Pieces move only on dark squares. Mandatory captures are enforced. Captures are allowed both forward and backward. Kings move and capture diagonally to any square. The Turkish strike rule applies (only one opponent piece can be captured per move). The majority rule applies (when multiple capture options exist, the one capturing the most pieces is mandatory). If a pawn captures and reaches the opponent's back rank, it continues capturing as a pawn, not immediately becoming a king. Pawns reaching the opponent's back rank by a regular move become kings and can utilize king moves from their next turn.
