South of Midnight's Narrative and Release Date
Compulsion Games' narrative designer, Zaire Lanier, recently revealed details about South of Midnight's compelling story and its highly anticipated release date: April 8, 2025. Set in the atmospheric town of Prospero, the game features a diverse range of Southern-inspired locations, from flooded landscapes and murky swamps to the majestic Appalachian Mountains.
The story begins amidst a raging hurricane, with protagonist Hazel and her mother preparing for the storm. A disagreement leads Hazel to leave their home, only to witness its destruction by the relentless flood. Her desperate search for her missing mother unexpectedly unveils her true heritage, plunging her into a fantastical world teeming with creatures straight out of Southern folklore.
Lanier explains, "Hazel encounters fantastical phenomena throughout Prospero, including Catfish, a colossal—and surprisingly talkative—creature trapped in a tree after the hurricane. Catfish reveals Hazel's identity as a Weaver, possessing magical abilities to perceive and manipulate the threads connecting all fates."
This discovery allows Hazel to see and weave the very threads of the universe. However, her journey is fraught with peril. Haints, corrupted creatures spreading decay, pose a significant threat. Hazel must master her Weaving powers to purify them and restore balance to the world.
Embark on Hazel's adventure through the American Deep South starting April 3, 2025, with the Premium Edition ($49.99) on Steam and the Xbox Store. The standard edition is available for $39.99, and Game Pass subscribers can play on day one.
Gameplay: Threads and Weaving
South of Midnight introduces a unique gameplay mechanic centered around threads—the connections forming the tapestry of fate—and the magical art of Weaving. Hazel utilizes this power in combat, unlocking spells and abilities as she confronts various Haints.
Game director Jasmin Roy, during the Xbox Developer Direct 2025, described the core combat loop: "Spells like Push, Pull, and Weave provide tactical advantages. Timing is crucial. Pull enemies closer for melee combos, push them back to interrupt attacks, then follow up with devastating strikes."
Hazel's arsenal includes a spindle, weaving hooks, and a distaff, inspired by traditional textile crafting. These tools offer diverse combat options and abilities to purify the Haints.
Weaving is also crucial for exploration. Hazel uses her magical powers to conjure "past incarnations of objects," solving puzzles and accessing new areas. The Direct showcased her conjuring a spectral carriage and a glider.
Hazel's quest to save her mother takes her across diverse regions, each with unique themes and environments, ruled by mythical creatures steeped in Southern Gothic lore. One such creature shown was Two-Toed Tom, a massive albino alligator adorned with weaponry and vegetation.
Hazel must collect Echoes, fragments of haunted memories, to heal these corrupted creatures. However, epic confrontations are inevitable before she can ultimately purify them.
Hazel's journey to save her mother will require her to master her Weaving powers, freeing corrupted mythical creatures and ultimately uncovering the truth.
