Voice Actors Replaced: Discovered Via Patch Notes

Authore: MiaUpdate:Apr 01,2025

In a recent development related to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, two voice actors from Zenless Zone Zero (ZZZ) discovered they had been replaced following the release of the game's patch notes. The strike, centered on the contentious issue of generative AI protections in the video game industry, has led to significant changes in the voice acting landscape.

ZZZ, developed by HoYoverse, the creators of Genshin Impact, is not directly affected by the strike as it was in development before the strike's commencement on July 25, 2024. However, voice actors have the option to refrain from signing new contracts in solidarity with the striking union members or to avoid projects without a SAG Interim Agreement.

Emeri Chase, the voice of Soldier 11, stated their replacement was due to their refusal to work on projects not covered by a SAG Interim Agreement during the strike. This decision was made in support of the union's fight for AI protections, which Chase believes are crucial for the future of the industry. Similarly, Nicholas Thurkettle, who voiced Lycaon, found himself replaced, despite not being a union member.

Chase took to Bluesky to clarify the situation, explaining the distinction between projects that are 'struck' and those not covered by Interim Agreements. They emphasized that many actors are choosing to withhold their work from such projects to bolster the union's efforts in securing vital AI rights.

"I knew that by withholding work it was possible I'd be replaced, but I hoped HoYoverse would choose to leave her silent until I was able to return," Chase remarked. Both Chase and Thurkettle learned of their replacements simultaneously with the public, expressing their shock and disappointment. Thurkettle, despite not being a SAG member, stood firm on his decision to demand AI protections, even at the cost of his role.

In a related incident, Activision confirmed the recasting of characters in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6's Zombies mode due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Voice actors Zeke Alton and Julie Nathanson, who portrayed William Peck and Samantha Maxis respectively, were replaced by new actors. Alton expressed concerns about the impact on his professional reputation due to the lack of proper crediting for the replacement actor.
