Star Wars fans eager to delve into the galaxy far, far away beyond the events of *The Rise of Skywalker* won't have to wait for Shawn Levy's upcoming film *Star Wars: Starfighter*. Instead, they'll get a sneak peek sooner through the new young adult novel, *Star Wars: The Last Order*. This novel, announced by publisher Penguin Random House, promises to deepen the lore surrounding beloved characters Finn, portrayed by John Boyega, and Jannah, played by Naomi Ackie, from *The Rise of Skywalker*.
In *Star Wars: The Last Order*, penned by acclaimed author Kwame Mbalia, the story unfolds post-*The Rise of Skywalker*. The Resistance undertakes a daring rescue of a ship filled with kidnapped young passengers from the clutches of the First Order. As Finn and Jannah embark on a mission to track down the First Order officer behind these abductions, they confront their own tumultuous histories as former stormtroopers. The novel’s official synopsis from Penguin Random House reads:
“Following the end of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the Resistance rescues a ship full of young passengers who had been kidnapped by the First Order. As Finn and Jannah set out to find the First Order officer responsible before he can endanger any more children, the two former stormtroopers must wrestle with their own complicated pasts as soldiers of the oppressive regime.”
This marks the first Star Wars project to explore the universe after *The Rise of Skywalker*, although it's not the first project announced to do so. Shawn Levy’s *Star Wars: Starfighter*, a standalone film set to be released on May 28, 2027, remains on the horizon. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, in an interview with Deadline, highlighted that *Starfighter* would take place "post-[the first] nine, maybe five or six years out." The film's writer, Jonathan Tropper, expressed optimism about its progress to Screen Rant, saying, "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think." Excitingly, Ryan Gosling has been confirmed to star in the film, with its release date officially announced at Star Wars Celebration Japan.
