The PS Portal, Sony's innovative handheld gaming accessory for the PS5 console, resembles an extended split-pad DualSense controller with an 8-inch 1080p LCD screen seamlessly integrated in the middle. It transforms your PS5 into a portable gaming device, enabling you to stream games from your console at up to 60fps. The controller retains all the beloved features of the DualSense, such as haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and a touchscreen interface that replaces the traditional touchpad. While the PS Portal can stream your games even when you're away from home, it requires a **very stable, very fast** internet connection. It's important to remember that the PS Portal isn't a standalone device; it's strictly a remote player for the PlayStation 5, meaning you'll need a PS5 to use it.
Excitingly, you no longer need a PS5 to enjoy games on the PS Portal. Thanks to a recent update, Sony has introduced a feature allowing owners to stream games directly from its PlayStation Now cloud streaming service. This means Portal users can connect either to their PS5 or directly to Sony’s cloud servers, accessing a vast library of over 120 games, including titles like Ghost of Tsushima, Resident Evil 3 Remake, The Last of Us Part 1 Remastered, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. It’s important to note that you must subscribe to the highest tier of PlayStation Plus, but at $18 a month, it's a more cost-effective option than purchasing a $500 console plus additional game costs.
While the PlayStation Portal isn’t the only way to stream PS5 games over Wi-Fi within your home, it offers a more streamlined experience than alternatives. You can replicate its functionality by downloading the PS Remote Play app on a mobile device, including other gaming handhelds like the Steam Deck. However, this method is more complex to set up and doesn't include all the DualSense features.
PlayStation Portal Review by Seth Macy
"The PlayStation Portal is the most surprising device I've ever come away from loving after approaching it with skepticism. It offers a far superior experience compared to using your phone with a clip-on controller, and it works much better than I had anticipated. I truly appreciate the freedom it provides to play my PS5 from anywhere with decent WiFi coverage, particularly when my family is using the TV to play the Switch. While it's important to remember that it's not a standalone device and requires a PlayStation 5 to function, the main limitations of the Portal are its inability to access WiFi that requires a web browser login, and its lack of Bluetooth support for audio. Despite these caveats, it's a fantastic device that represents the best current solution for PlayStation Remote Play. If it weren't for these issues, I'd consider it a must-own for every PS5 owner who loves handheld gaming or needs to share the household TV."
