"Oblivion Remastered Surges on Steam, Set for Further Growth"

Authore: NathanUpdate:May 14,2025

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered made a significant impact upon its surprise launch on Steam on April 22. Achieving a peak concurrent player count of over 180,000 on its release day, the game quickly ascended to the top of Steam's global top-selling games list, surpassing heavyweights such as Valve's Counter-Strike 2, the viral sensation Schedule I, and Blizzard's Overwatch 2, which had just received a major update.

Not only did Oblivion Remastered dominate sales, but it also became the fourth most-played game on Steam that day, trailing only behind Counter-Strike 2, PUBG, and Dota 2. It stands out as the most-played single-player RPG on the platform, even ahead of the popular Baldur’s Gate 3, and boasts a 'very positive' user review rating.

While Steam's statistics are impressive, they only represent a part of the game's overall success. As a title under Microsoft's wing (due to Microsoft's ownership of Bethesda's parent company ZeniMax Media), Oblivion Remastered was also made available immediately on Xbox Game Pass for Ultimate subscribers. This likely contributed to a significant number of players accessing the game through the subscription service.

Moreover, the game's launch extended to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, which means the true peak concurrent player count on launch day across all platforms would be considerably higher than the 180,000 reported on Steam alone. Although Bethesda has yet to release total player or sales figures, the game's initial performance suggests a strong start, with expectations of even greater numbers as it enters its first weekend on the market.

Developed by the remake specialists at Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, Oblivion Remastered brings a host of visual and feature enhancements to the table. The game supports 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, but the improvements go beyond just graphics. Key gameplay elements such as the leveling system, character creation, combat animations, and in-game menus have all been refined. New dialogue, a more robust third-person view, and advanced lip sync technology have been added, earning the game praise from fans. Some even argue it's more of a remake than a remaster, though Bethesda insists on the latter classification.

Originally released in 2006 as a sequel to the beloved Morrowind, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion was available on PC and Xbox 360, with a PlayStation 3 version following in 2007. Set in the fictional province of Cyrodiil, the game follows the player's journey to thwart a fanatical cult intent on opening portals to the demonic realm of Oblivion.
