Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice: Evidence Suggests Novel Control Scheme

Emerging circumstantial evidence hints at a unique feature for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2: its Joy-Cons may offer a computer mouse-like control mode. While the widespread adoption of such a mode by game developers remains uncertain, this potential functionality aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative controller designs.

The evidence originates from Vietnamese customs data obtained by Famiboards user LiC, who previously uncovered information related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data, a source of numerous Switch 2 rumors, recently revealed references to polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles"—a term typically associated with the bottom of computer mice. These tapes, intended "to stick to game console handles," are listed with model numbers LG7 and SML7, not yet found in public component databases. The 90 x 90mm size suggests they could cover the entire back of the new Joy-Cons, likely requiring trimming during assembly.

Not a First for Handhelds

While novel for Nintendo, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented in the handheld gaming space. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already features this capability with its right controller, transformable into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic housing to aid smooth surface movement. The Legion GO's magnetic controller rails, a feature also rumored for the Switch 2, further draw parallels between the two devices.
