MultiVersus Shuts Down After Season 5 Ends in May

Player First Games has announced that MultiVersus Season 5 will mark the final chapter for the Warner Bros. platform fighting game, with the service ending on May 30, 2025, at 9 a.m. PST. The studio shared this news through a detailed blog post on their website. MultiVersus, which made its debut on May 28 of the previous year, is set to kick off its Season 5 on February 4, extending through to its scheduled closure in May 2025. At that time, support for online play will cease, though Player First has assured that players will retain access to all their earned and purchased content in offline modes, including local gameplay and training.

The MultiVersus team expressed their gratitude to the community, stating, “Most importantly, we want to thank every player and person who has ever played or supported MultiVersus. All of us on the Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games teams have poured our heart and soul into this game. We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey.”

Effective immediately, real-money transactions for MultiVersus have been discontinued. However, players can continue to use Gleamium and character tokens to access in-game content until the support ends on May 30. At that point, MultiVersus will also be removed from digital storefronts such as the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store.

The decision to end MultiVersus comes after Warner Bros. Discovery labeled the project as a significant disappointment. In a financial call from November, the company revealed that MultiVersus had underperformed, leading to a $100 million writedown in their games sector. This added to a total of $300 million in writedowns following the release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in January. Additionally, Warner Bros. Games head David Haddad is set to depart from the company following a challenging 2024, according to a recent report by Variety.

“We took another $100 million plus impairment due to the underperforming releases, primarily MultiVersus this quarter, bringing total writedown year-to-date to over $300 million in our games business, a key factor in this year’s studio profit decline,” stated chief financial officer Gunnar Wiedenfels during the November call.

Although MultiVersus will conclude just days after its one-year anniversary, Season 5 promises to be a memorable farewell. Alongside the customary new content, the season will introduce new playable characters, Lola Bunny and Aquaman. Lola Bunny will be unlockable as a daily calendar reward, while Aquaman will be accessible through the battle pass, both available starting next week.
