Minecraft Movie Sets Video Game Adaptation Debut Record

Authore: IsabellaUpdate:Oct 05,2025

The Minecraft Movie has dominated the box office with a historic opening, surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie to claim the highest domestic debut ever for a video game adaptation.

Starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black (who also appeared in The Super Mario Bros. Movie), this Xbox game adaptation exceeded projections with a massive $157 million North American opening. While The Super Mario Bros. Movie currently holds the title as the highest-grossing video game adaptation ever after its April 2023 $146 million domestic debut, The Minecraft Movie has set a new opening weekend benchmark.

Internationally, the film added $144 million for a staggering $301 million global debut. With a reported $150 million production budget (excluding marketing), Warner Bros.' adaptation may have already recouped costs worldwide.

The movie is based on Mojang's Minecraft, the best-selling video game franchise of all time. Microsoft's sandbox phenomenon remains a global gaming staple and has released special movie-themed DLC in conjunction with the film's premiere.

IGN's review scored the film 6/10, noting: "Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess brings a uniquely funny spin to this family-friendly adventure, particularly during its more restrained first half."

In contrast, Disney's live-action Snow White struggles with disappointing box office results, currently standing at $168.4 million worldwide ($77.5 million domestic/$90.9 million international). With its $250 million production cost, matching Mufasa: The Lion King's comeback success seems increasingly unlikely.
