NetEase Games' commitment to releasing a new Marvel Rivals hero every half-season hasn't stifled creativity within the player base. A talented player, WickedCube, recently unveiled a compelling playable Doctor Octopus concept.
A 30-second video showcasing rough gameplay, posted on r/MarvelRivals, features a pre-Hulk Bruce Banner seemingly in a testing environment. However, the real focus is the eight-armed Doctor Octopus, a remarkably polished fan-made interpretation of the classic Spider-Man villain within the Marvel Rivals framework.
While somewhat rudimentary in its animation, the design is instantly recognizable. WickedCube's Doc Ock utilizes magnetized arms to navigate obstacles, effectively granting flight capabilities near stable structures – a clever adaptation for a game with destructible environments. The concept even includes unique abilities: "Havoc Claw" for melee attacks and "Wrecking Grip" for ranged combat. The post garnered over 16,000 upvotes, a testament to its ingenuity and playability.
"Doc Ock's tentacles present a unique design challenge," WickedCube explained, citing his inspiration. "To my knowledge, fully realized 3D tentacle movement hasn't been perfectly implemented in a game before." The independent game developer, previously with Keen Software House, was inspired by recent PSN downtime and fan art.
The positive reception has been incredibly rewarding, with many urging NetEase to incorporate WickedCube's ideas. While he doesn't plan to further refine the design, he intends to release a playable version and share the process through a YouTube tutorial series and open-source code on GitHub.
NetEase's official mid-season update, releasing February 21st, includes the Human Torch and The Thing, following the recent addition of Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman. This rapid release schedule surpasses competitors, yet the vast Marvel universe continues to inspire fan creations like WickedCube's Doctor Octopus. His future projects include Nightcrawler and Professor Xavier.
"The launch roster is substantial, and the promised release rate is astonishing," WickedCube commented. "The designers clearly understand fun game design, which is the most challenging aspect." The update also features balance adjustments and gameplay refinements.
