inZOI's "Sort Of" Sex Feature: A Closer Look
The upcoming early access release of inZOI has sparked considerable curiosity, particularly regarding its approach to mature themes. During a recent "Ask Me (almost) Anything" session on the game's official Discord, three team leads addressed player questions, with responses translated by inZOI Assistant Director Joel Lee.
While questions covered various aspects of realism—baby care, body types, driving—the focus frequently circled around explicit content. Lee's response regarding sex was carefully worded: "Our answer is: sort of. There is a feature in the game where the male and female Zoi are together, likely in bed, with the intention of creating babies. The visual representation relies heavily on player interpretation; what you see isn't explicitly shown, you have to infer the action. It's there, sort of. Maybe not to the level everyone expected."
This suggests a Sims-style approach, implying the act itself is implied rather than graphically depicted. This differs from a fully realistic portrayal, aiming for broader accessibility.
Why the Blurred Lines (Literally)?
Players questioned why Zois shower with towels. The developers explained that pixelated blurring, effective in cartoonish games like The Sims, doesn't translate well to inZOI's more realistic art style. In fact, attempts at blurring created unintended, more suggestive imagery. Furthermore, a bug during testing temporarily showed Zois fully nude in reflections, a problem since resolved.
Broad Appeal: A T for Teen Rating
Despite the questions about mature content, inZOI has received a T for Teen rating from the ESRB, similar to The Sims 4. This reflects the developers' goal of broad appeal. Lee emphasized, "We wanted to provide a game that was widely available to as many age groups as possible."
