Hyperkin's Hyper Strummer: A New Guitar Hero Controller for the Wii

A new Guitar Hero controller is coming to the Wii in 2025! Hyperkin's Hyper Strummer will launch on January 8th, priced at $76.99 on Amazon. This unexpected release targets retro gaming enthusiasts and those looking to revisit the Guitar Hero and Rock Band franchises.

The Wii, while a significant console for Nintendo, hasn't been produced since 2013. Similarly, the Guitar Hero series saw its last mainline title in 2015 (Guitar Hero Live), with the final Wii release being 2010's Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock. Despite this, the Hyper Strummer offers a fresh opportunity to enjoy these classic rhythm games.

The Hyper Strummer, an updated version of a previous Hyperkin controller, is compatible with various Wii Guitar Hero and Rock Band titles, including Rock Band 2, 3, The Beatles, Green Day, and Lego Rock Band (but not the original Rock Band). It connects via a Wii Remote inserted into the back of the controller.

Why Now? A Resurgence of Interest

The question remains: who is the target audience for a new controller for discontinued games and a discontinued console? While mass market appeal is unlikely, the Hyper Strummer caters to several niches:

  • Retro Gamers: Many original Guitar Hero controllers have suffered wear and tear over the years. The Hyper Strummer provides a replacement for players who may have abandoned the games due to broken peripherals.

  • Nostalgia: The release taps into the nostalgic appeal of these classic rhythm games, offering a chance for fans to relive the experience.

  • Modern Challenges: The recent resurgence in Guitar Hero interest, fueled by events like Fortnite's Rock Band-inspired mode and the "perfect score" challenge trend, makes a reliable, new controller a desirable option for dedicated players. The Hyper Strummer offers improved input accuracy compared to worn-out older controllers.
