For fans of the long-running franchise Digimon, the upcoming Digimon Con 2025 is poised to be a landmark event. You can anticipate a slew of new announcements and updates about upcoming projects within the franchise, but one particular teaser has caught our attention: a confused Renamon paired with a mobile phone.
The obvious speculation is that this could be hinting at a digital version of the Digimon TCG. Bandai Namco already offers a tutorial app for iOS and Android for many of their physical trading card games, and following the success of Pokémon TCG Pocket, it wouldn't be surprising to see Digimon follow suit.
However, it's wise to temper our expectations a bit. The teaser doesn't explicitly confirm whether mobile refers to the platform for this new project or merely suggests watching the upcoming livestream on a mobile device.
Going DigitalIt's no secret that Digimon, while not unpopular, is often overshadowed by Pokémon. During the late '90s and 2000s, there was a notable rivalry, but while Digimon might be the choice for nostalgic anime aficionados, Pokémon has claimed the global pop culture crown.
Launching a digital TCG for Digimon wouldn't be a guaranteed success as it is for Pokémon. Yet, it wouldn't be a significant risk either, given the existing popularity of the Digimon TCG. Expanding its reach to more players could be a major victory. We'll have to tune into the Digimon Con livestream later this month to find out more.
