Sid Meier's Civilization VII ushers in a new era for the iconic turn-based strategy series, launching across major gaming platforms. This article clarifies the game's cross-play and cross-progression capabilities.
Cross-Play:
Civilization VII supports cross-play, but with limitations. Players require an active 2K account linked to their chosen platforms. Cross-play functions seamlessly between PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, macOS, and Linux, offering standard map sizes and player counts.
However, incorporating Nintendo Switch players restricts map sizes (no standard or larger maps) and player counts (up to four players in Antiquity and Exploration Ages, six in the Modern Age). This is due to the Switch's hardware limitations. While playable on Switch, these limitations should be considered, particularly in online multiplayer.
Cross-Progression:
Unlike the complexities of cross-play, Civilization VII's cross-progression is straightforward. With an active 2K account, progress is synchronized across all linked platforms. This means players can seamlessly transition between PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and other supported platforms without restarting their game. This feature, absent in Civilization VI at launch, is a key improvement in Civilization VII.
This reflects modern gaming habits, allowing players to continue their empire-building journey regardless of their chosen device – be it a Steam Deck, Switch, PC, or console.
Civilization VII launches February 11th.
