Bayonetta Anniversary: PlatinumGames Celebrates 15 Years

Bayonetta's 15th Anniversary: A Year of Celebration

PlatinumGames is commemorating the 15th anniversary of the original Bayonetta with a year-long celebration, expressing gratitude to fans for their unwavering support. The game's innovative design and fast-paced action, hallmarks of director Hideki Kamiya's style, captivated players upon its release in October 2009 (Japan) and January 2010 (worldwide). This success led to sequels exclusively on Nintendo platforms, solidifying Bayonetta's status as a beloved video game icon.

The original Bayonetta, published by Sega, garnered critical acclaim for its unique premise and exhilarating gameplay, reminiscent of Devil May Cry. Bayonetta herself quickly became a prominent figure among female video game protagonists. While the initial title had a wider platform release, the subsequent installments were Nintendo exclusives, appearing on the Wii U and Nintendo Switch. The prequel, Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, released in 2023, introduced a younger Bayonetta, while her adult form remains a popular playable character in the Super Smash Bros. series.

PlatinumGames recently announced a dedicated "Bayonetta 15th Anniversary Year" for 2025, promising special announcements and events throughout the year. While specifics remain scarce, the developer encourages fans to follow their social media channels for updates.

2025: A Year of Bayonetta Festivities

Already, Wayo Records has launched a limited-edition Bayonetta music box, showcasing a design inspired by the Super Mirror from the original game and playing Masami Ueda's "Theme Of Bayonetta - Mysterious Destiny." PlatinumGames is also releasing monthly Bayonetta-themed smartphone calendar wallpapers, with January's featuring Bayonetta and Jeanne in kimonos under a full moon.

Even after 15 years, Bayonetta continues to be praised for its refinement of stylish action, building upon the foundations laid by Devil May Cry. Its innovative additions, such as Witch Time, influenced subsequent PlatinumGames titles like Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and Nier: Automata. Fans eagerly anticipate further announcements throughout this special anniversary year.
