Water Decks Gain Powerful Card in Pokemon TCG Pocket's Triumphant Light Expansion

Authore: CamilaUpdate:May 13,2025

When *Pokemon TCG Pocket* first launched, the meta was quickly dominated by a select few decks, with Misty and water-type Pokemon decks standing out as particularly dominant and often despised due to their reliance on coin flips. These decks could potentially overpower opponents early in the game, depending heavily on luck.

Despite the release of three expansions since then, one might expect new cards to have emerged that could challenge or counter these Misty decks. However, the latest expansion has only served to bolster their strength, leading to frustration among many players.

It's not that Misty decks are the most powerful in the game; rather, the luck-based mechanics of Misty make losses feel particularly unfair. Misty, a Supporter card, allows players to select a water-type Pokemon and flip coins until they land on tails, attaching one water-type energy for each heads flipped. This could result in attaching anywhere from zero to numerous energies, potentially enabling a first-turn win or powering up strong cards before the opponent can respond effectively.

Subsequent expansions have only made Misty decks more formidable. *Mythical Island* introduced Vaporeon, which can move bonus energy freely between water-types. *Space-Time Smackdown* added Manaphy, which increases water energy on the board. Both expansions also brought in powerful water-type Pokemon like Palkia ex and Gyarados ex, keeping water decks at the top of the meta for several expansions.

The latest expansion, *Triumphant Light*, introduces Irida, another Supporter card that can heal 40 damage from each Pokemon with water-type energy attached. This addition potentially allows water-type decks to stage significant comebacks, further enhancing their dominance. While grass-type decks were previously the healing specialists, Irida shifts this advantage to water decks, especially when combined with Misty, Manaphy, and Vaporeon.

Some experts suggest that DeNA may have introduced Irida to force players to make strategic choices about which Supporters to include in their limited 20-card decks. However, many skilled players have managed to incorporate both Misty and Irida effectively.

With a scheduled event approaching, where players can earn rewards for winning consecutive matches in the game's online competitive mode, water decks are expected to be prevalent. The coveted gold profile badge is awarded for a five-match winning streak, a challenging feat made even harder by the dominance of these decks. Given their current strength, players might consider adopting a water deck to compete effectively.
