Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film: Coming Sooner Than Expected, Says Writer

Are you eagerly awaiting Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars film? Rest assured, the director behind Deadpool & Wolverine is still fully committed to bringing this project to life. We've even received a reassuring update from the film's writer, Jonathan Tropper, who shared his excitement with Screen Rant: "I am \[excited\] too. I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."

Currently shrouded in mystery, the film is set to take place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has provided some insight into its timeline, noting in a February interview with Deadline, "That's also in the future. It's all post-\[the first\] nine. Shawn's is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions the film as the first to delve into the post-Rise of Skywalker era.

Kennedy also confirmed during the same discussion that Levy's film will follow the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu in 2026. She stated, "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that." Adding to the anticipation, it's reported that Ryan Gosling is set to star in this exciting new addition to the Star Wars universe.

Jonathan Tropper's positive comments hint that progress is being made on Levy's film. However, fans will need to exercise patience as the movie isn't expected to hit theaters until at least the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027.

It's been a while since Disney released a Star Wars film, with the last being the critically mixed Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. In the interim, several planned films have been cancelled, including projects from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and the Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Additionally, a Star Wars movie slated for a late 2026 release was recently removed from Disney's schedule.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled three new feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni set within his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi film helmed by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order movie directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. The latter film will see Daisy Ridley reprise her iconic role as Rey, exploring events after The Rise of Skywalker.

The Obaid-Chinoy project has undergone several transformations, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently stepping down after succeeding Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Nevertheless, Disney continues to prioritize Rey's character, as reported by THR, indicating her presence in multiple upcoming Star Wars films.

Disney's Star Wars lineup extends beyond these projects. Last year, it was announced that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg will pen a new trilogy, which, contrary to initial reports, will not continue the Skywalker Saga.

The next Star Wars content you can look forward to is Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple-episode launch, promising an exciting continuation of the series.
