New Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Patents Reveal Magnetic Attachment and Mouse Functionality
While Nintendo remains tight-lipped about the Switch 2's official specifications, recent patent filings strongly suggest significant Joy-Con upgrades. Reports of magnetic attachment and mouse functionality are now virtually confirmed by these patents.
The patents describe a game controller with magnetic attachment to the console. The text explicitly states: “This game controller is detachably mounted to a body device that has a recess, that comprises a first magnet and a second magnet at the bottom of the recess, and that can execute game processing.” Two buttons, magnetically secured, are required for detachment.
The patent further details a novel mouse-like function. Illustrations show the Joy-Cons used as a mouse, held rail-side down, with shoulder buttons acting as mouse clicks (R1 and R2 for left and right clicks respectively). Joystick manipulation may provide scrolling functionality.
The patent showcases various usage scenarios, including a dual-mouse setup or a single Joy-Con used as a mouse while the other functions as a standard controller.

The magnetic Joy-Con attachment was an early leak, while the mouse functionality emerged later. However, a January teaser subtly hinted at this feature, showing Joy-Cons smoothly gliding across a surface.
