Capcom Producer Hints at Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Original Character Returns
Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto has fueled speculation about the return of beloved original characters from Marvel vs. Capcom 2 in future Capcom fighting games. Speaking at EVO 2024, Matsumoto stated that the possibility of their return in a "new game" is always open.
This renewed interest stems from the upcoming release of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, a remastered collection of classic titles including Marvel vs. Capcom 2. This collection, Matsumoto suggests, provides a perfect opportunity to reintroduce characters like Amingo, Ruby Heart, and SonSon to a wider audience. These characters, originally featured in Marvel vs. Capcom 2, have seen limited appearances in subsequent games.
Matsumoto emphasized that the characters' future appearances aren't limited to the Versus series. He hinted at the possibility of their inclusion in titles like Street Fighter 6 depending on fan response to their reintroduction in the Fighting Collection. He sees this as a chance to expand Capcom's creative pool and offer more diverse content.
The Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection itself has been a long-time goal for Matsumoto and his team, involving extensive collaboration with Marvel. The producer also expressed Capcom's desire to create a new Versus title and re-release other legacy fighting games on modern platforms with features like rollback netcode. However, he acknowledged the challenges involved, including scheduling and collaboration with external parties.
Matsumoto concluded by stating that re-releasing these classic titles is the best way to gauge fan interest and potentially energize the community, paving the way for future projects.
