Warner Bros. and HBO have officially announced the first six actors who will portray iconic Hogwarts professors in the much-anticipated Harry Potter television series. This announcement comes after months of speculation and rumors about how the beloved story of Harry, Hermione, and Ron will be reimagined for a new audience.
The casting lineup includes John Lithgow, previously confirmed to play Albus Dumbledore, bringing his seasoned talent from projects like Conclave and Dexter. Joining him is Nick Frost, known for Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, who will embody the gentle giant Rubeus Hagrid. Paapa Essiedu, acclaimed for his roles in I May Destroy You and Black Mirror, will take on the complex character of Severus Snape. The ensemble is completed by Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse as the ever-watchful Argus Filch.

In a joint statement, showrunner and executive producer Francesca Gardiner, along with director and executive producer Mark Mylod, expressed their excitement: “We’re delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can’t wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life.”
The roles of Dumbledore, Hagrid, and Snape are not only pivotal within the Harry Potter universe but also significant in broader pop culture. John Lithgow, in particular, has spoken about the weight of taking on the role of Dumbledore. In an interview with ScreenRant at the Sundance Film Festival, he shared, “I just got the phone call up at the Sundance Film Festival for yet another film, and it was not an easy decision because it’s going to define me for the last chapter of my life, I’m afraid. But I’m very excited. Some wonderful people are turning their attention back to Harry Potter. That’s why it’s been such a hard decision. I’ll be about 87 years old at the wrap party, but I’ve said yes.”

While the Harry Potter series does not yet have a confirmed release date, production is expected to start soon. Details on how the series will diverge from J.K. Rowling's original novels or the film adaptations from the 2000s and early 2010s remain undisclosed. However, Warner Bros. has indicated that the show will explore Harry's story more thoroughly than the films allowed. J.K. Rowling herself is involved in the show's development, which has stirred some controversy.
