Gundam Breaker 4: A Deep Dive Review Across Platforms

Back in 2016, the Gundam Breaker series was a niche import for PS Vita enthusiasts. The announcement of a global, multi-platform release for Gundam Breaker 4 in 2024 was a huge surprise, and after 60 hours across various platforms, it's clear why. This isn't just a game; it represents a significant leap for Western Gundam fans.

The significance? No more import hassles! Gundam Breaker 3's Asia English release is a distant memory. Gundam Breaker 4 boasts dual audio (English and Japanese) and extensive subtitle options (English, French, Italian, German, Spanish).

The story, while serviceable, isn't the main attraction. It has its highs and lows – occasionally lengthy pre-mission dialogue, but later offset by intriguing character reveals and more engaging conversations. Newcomers will be brought up to speed, though some character appearances might feel more impactful with prior series knowledge.

The true appeal lies in Gunpla customization. It's incredibly deep, allowing adjustments to individual parts (arms, weapons, scale), even mixing standard and SD (super-deformed) parts for unique creations. Builder parts add further customization, some with unique skills. EX and OP skills, dependent on parts and weapons, and ability cartridges with buffs/debuffs, enhance combat.

Missions reward parts, materials for leveling and rarity upgrades, and unlock more skills. The game's difficulty is well-balanced; grinding isn't necessary on standard difficulty. Higher difficulties unlock later, increasing the challenge. Optional quests, including a fun survival mode, provide extra rewards and variety.

Beyond combat, extensive paint, decal, and weathering options cater to Gunpla enthusiasts. The gameplay itself is a triumph. Combat remains engaging, even on easier difficulties, with diverse weapons and skills. Boss fights involve targeting weak points and destroying shields, though one specific boss fight presented a challenge due to AI issues. The visual style, while not photorealistic, is effective and well-optimized for lower-end hardware.

The soundtrack is a mixed bag, with some forgettable tracks and some standouts. The absence of anime music packs is a minor disappointment. Voice acting, however, is excellent in both English and Japanese.

Minor issues include a repetitive mission type and a few bugs (some Steam Deck-specific). Online functionality wasn't fully testable pre-launch on PC.

The PC port shines with its support for over 60fps, mouse and keyboard, and multiple controller profiles. Steam Deck compatibility is excellent, running smoothly with Proton. Performance on Switch is lower (around 30fps), with compromises in resolution and detail, especially noticeable in the assembly section. PS5 offers a superior visual experience at 60fps.

The Ultimate Edition's DLC adds early-game parts and diorama content, enhancing the experience but not fundamentally altering it. While the story is enjoyable, the game's core strength lies in its customization and engaging gameplay.

Gundam Breaker 4 is a fantastic entry, especially for Steam Deck users. Minor issues aside, it's a must-have for Gunpla fans and action game enthusiasts.
