Setting and Story
The game unfolds within the colossal Library of Babel—a nod to Jorge Luis Borges's short story about a library containing every possible book. This isn't your average library; it's a blend of Borges's concept and the biblical Tower of Babel, infused with Judeo-Christian mythology. Think Evangelion-esque vibes, but with a unique twist.
You play as The Seer, awakening in this strange place with a weighty destiny: becoming the new custodian of the Library of Babel. Your arrival triggers significant, and potentially ominous, changes. A monster emerges from the depths, time-travel shenanigans ensue, and a clockwork star threatens everything. It's a whirlwind from the start.
Gameplay
Black Beacon offers a 3D world explorable from a top-down or free camera perspective, easily switched with a pinch. Combat is real-time, hack-and-slash action with combo chaining and strategic character switching mid-battle—even mid-combo! This tag-team approach lets benched characters regenerate stamina quickly, encouraging dynamic team management. It's not mindless button-mashing; mastering timing and enemy tells is key to success. The diverse character roster, each with unique combat styles, keeps things fresh and engaging. Several characters are particularly well-developed, making them fun to get to know.
