"The Authority Film Delayed: James Gunn Cites Challenges in World of 'The Boys'"

It seems that the DCU movie *The Authority* might be facing some challenges, as DC Studios co-chief James Gunn has revealed it's been placed on the "back burner." Announced as part of Gunn and Peter Safran's expansive Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters DC Universe reboot two years ago, *The Authority* introduces the famously ruthless superhero team from the WildStorm Universe. Initially described by Gunn as a "big movie," recent developments suggest it has encountered significant hurdles.

During a DC Studios presentation attended by IGN, Gunn pinpointed *The Authority* as the "hardest" project within the announced slate of Chapter 1 films. He highlighted the influence of Amazon's successful series, *The Boys*, as a factor contributing to the difficulties. "Honestly, *Authority's* been the one that's been the hardest, both because of the shifting overall story and because of getting it right in a world with *The Boys* and a world with all the things that *The Authority* influenced that came out after it," Gunn confessed. He also noted the challenge of integrating new characters while continuing the stories of beloved characters already filmed.

One character from *The Authority*, electronics prodigy The Engineer / Angela Spica, is set to make an appearance in the DCU's kickoff film, *Superman*. The Engineer is notable for being one of the most powerful members of the team, boasting abilities like self-duplication, technopathy, genius-level intellect, and radio-induced telepathy. *The Authority* isn't the only project from Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters facing setbacks. Gunn mentioned that *Waller*, a spinoff from his HBO Max series *Peacemaker*, has also experienced delays. However, the HBO Max series *Booster Gold* is reportedly "going pretty strong," and *Paradise Lost* remains a priority with active development. "The pilot's being written right now," confirmed Safran.

As for *Swamp Thing*, Safran noted that DC Studios is willing to wait for acclaimed director James Mangold, who is currently working on *A Complete Unknown*. "Our writer-director went off to make another little movie, *A Complete Unknown*, and we hope that he'll come back to *Swamp Thing* when he's ready, because again, that was one of those ones that we love him as a filmmaker, so we're happy to wait for him," Safran explained. Gunn added that *Swamp Thing* "was always outside of that" larger interconnected story they're telling.
