Il aurait modifié les consoles de commutation utilisées en soudant des composants modifiés sur les circuits imprimés, leur permettant d'exécuter des jeux copiés illégalement. Les autorités affirment avoir prélevé 27 titres piratés sur chaque console avant de les vendre pour environ 28 000 ¥ (180 $ USD). L'individu a avoué les accusations et des enquêtes supplémentaires sont en cours.

Cette arrestation met en évidence la bataille en cours entre les éditeurs de jeux et le piratage. Nintendo, une cible fréquente, a lancé un avis de retrait en mai 2024 affectant 8 500 exemplaires de l'émulateur de commutateur Yuzu, après son arrêt deux mois auparavant. Leur procès initial contre le créateur de l'émulateur, Tropic Haze, a cité un million de copies piratées de la légende de Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom avant sa libération officielle.

L'action en justice contre le piratage s'intensifie. Des cas réussis antérieurs incluent des poursuites contre Romuniverse, ce qui a entraîné des dommages-intérêts de 2,1 millions de dollars à Nintendo en 2021 et plus de 12 millions de dollars en 2018. Ces batailles légales ont également eu un impact sur la disponibilité d'émulateurs comme Dolphin sur des plateformes telles que Steam.

Récemment, un avocat des brevets de Nintendo a mis en lumière la stratégie anti-piratage de l'entreprise.
