Digitizing the Legacy of Devarattam

This app was developed as part of my initiative, "Digitizing the Legacy of Devarattam," and is dedicated to Kalaimamani Mr. M. Kumararaman (Retired Teacher), Kalaimani Mr. M. Kannan Kumar, and Kalaimani Mr. K. Nellai Manikandan from Zamin Kodangipatti.

These respected figures have been honored with the KALAIMAMANI, KALAIMANI, and USTAD BISMILLAH KHAN YUVA PURASKAR awards, respectively, for their contributions to Devarattam.

I also dedicate this app to my Guru, Mr. E. Rajakamulu, and to all the beloved legends of Devarattam.

The primary aim of this Devarattam app is to promote awareness of Devarattam and its acclaimed artists.

Within the app, I have detailed the art form and its awardees.

Devarattam is a folk dance from Tamil Nadu, historically performed and still performed today by the Rajakambalathu Nayakkar community.

While Devarattam encompasses 32 to 72 dance steps, the core foundation consists of 32 basic steps, with the remaining being variations built upon them.

Devarattam dancers hold a kerchief in each hand and wear Salangai (ankle bells) on each leg.

They perform the dance to the rhythm played on a traditional percussion instrument called the Deva Thunthumi.
